A Closer Look at Model Outdoor Lighting Regulations for CT

  • ZOOM (ONLINE ONLY) (map)

Does your town or city need better lighting rules? In this webinar, we will take a close look at Lights Out Connecticut’s new Model Outdoor Lighting Regulations for Connecticut. These easy-to-follow regulations are designed to help communities safely reduce light pollution at little or no cost. Based on the Five Principles for Responsible Outdoor Lighting and lighting laws from towns like Greenwich and Canton, this model policy was designed for municipalities to adopt in whole or in part, to better manage nighttime lighting in their jurisdictions.

We will also discuss how to convince town councils or planning & zoning departments to adopt these regulations, including by making the clear case that responsible nighttime lighting saves money, lowers carbon emissions associated with wasted lighting, helps to protect birds and other wildlife from the harms of light pollution, and improves views of the night sky.

Format: In-depth interview of Leo Smith, Chair of DarkSky CT Chapter, and Meredith Barges, co-author of the Model Regulations and Co-Chair of Lights Out Connecticut.
